Mock driving test
A mock driving test is a full practice run of the UK practical test. Doing one or two before test day is the quickest way to find the faults you don't notice on normal lessons.
Take a full mock test on routes near your test centre in the Driving Test Routes app
What a mock test includes
- Eyesight check: read a car number plate from about 20 metres.
- Vehicle safety questions: one "tell me" question before you drive and one "show me" question while you drive.
- General driving: following directions through junctions, roundabouts and different speed limits.
- Independent driving: about 20 minutes following a sat nav or road signs.
- One reversing manoeuvre: parallel park, park in a bay, or pull up on the right and reverse.
- Possibly an emergency stop.

Three ways to take a mock test
With your instructor
Ask for a "mock test lesson": your instructor stays quiet, marks every fault and debriefs you at the end.
With a parent or friend
They give directions and note faults on a sheet. Our guide for parents shows how.
In the app
The Driving Test Routes app guides you round practice routes near your test centre with voice directions, scores braking, steering and smoothness, and gives the mock a pass or fail result with the faults to work on.

Mock driving test: questions
What is a mock driving test?
A full practice run of the practical driving test: the same length, the same parts and the same marking, done before test day so nothing feels new.
How long is a mock driving test?
Plan for about 40 minutes of driving, the same as the practical car test, plus a few minutes before and after.
Who can run a mock test for me?
Your driving instructor, a parent or friend who meets the requirements for supervising a learner, or an app that guides you round test routes and scores the drive.
When should I take a mock test?
Once you can drive a full lesson without prompts. Take two or three in the last weeks before your test, ideally on roads around your test centre.
