Running a mock driving test as a parent
You don't need to be an instructor to run a useful mock test. You need a plan, a route and a way to note faults.
Before you start
- Check you meet the requirements for supervising a learner (age, licence held for long enough, insurance covering the learner).
- Pick roads around the test centre: find the test routes near you.
- Print the checklist.
During the drive
- Give directions early and clearly: "At the end of the road, turn left."
- Stay quiet otherwise. No hints, unless it's about safety.
- Note each fault and where it happened.
- Include about 20 minutes of independent driving following signs or a sat nav.
The debrief
- Start with what went well.
- Go through faults in order and agree the two to practise first.
- Book the next lesson around those.
Let the Driving Test Routes app give the directions and mark the drive
